HISTORY OF THE IKBFU BOTANICAL GARDEN
The IKBFU Botanical Garden is situated on the grounds of the former Königsberg Municipal Horticultural Garden, in one of the most picturesque districts of the city. It was founded by Paul Kaeber, Professor and Head of the Department of Higher Plants and Systematics at Königsberg University, as a base for practical study sessions for students. The garden preserves his memorial, erected in 1919.
1904: Königsberg Municipal Horticultural Garden
The horticultural garden supplied the city's schools with plants for botany classes. It also played an important role in promoting public interest in plants — visitors could explore not only a remarkable dendrological collection, but also collections of vegetable, industrial, medicinal, and ornamental crops.
1948: Kaliningrad Research Station for Green Construction
The station operated with the status of a research institute. Greenhouses were built, conservatories were restored, sanitary felling was carried out, the pond was cleared, and the layout was redesigned.
1967: Botanical Garden
The garden was transferred to Kaliningrad State University (now Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University) and became a scientific unit of the university.
